Every day thousands of people go to work not thinking about potential hazards that can occur. Most workers walk through buildings, lift objects, or use a staircase, yet accidents will still happen. Therefore, it is important to recognize that slip and fall injury accidents are among the most common at work.
Most workers do not purposely try to get injured at work. Frequently, it is a simple matter of paying attention to the environment. Most companies have a safety policy and procedure on how to properly do assigned tasks. Even so, there are times when people get hurt. The most common injury is a slip and fall. Walking is not considered a risky activity, yet walking on a slippery surface becomes one. Let’s say that a person is walking down the hallway from a restroom break. Although there may be a sign that says the floor is wet, a worker may simply slow their pace. Unfortunately, if the soles of their shoes are wet from the bathroom floor they could easily slip. This happens when the leg or legs slip out from the person and they fall on their rear end.
Another common injury is when a worker is walking stairs. In a business environment, the treads of the stairs should have a gripping substance to keep feet from skidding. However, even with stair safety in place, accidents happen. In this case the person is usually going down the stairs. As the worker descends their foot either slips out from under them or they miss a step entirely. This often results in the worker falling down the stairs upright with their backside striking the walkway. The other possible problem is if they lose their balance and fall head first down the stairs. Both accidents can cause a great amount of pain.
Walking and stairs might seem potentially harmless, but most people are careful around ladders. Even so, employees who use them regularly sometimes forget to be cautious. They may lean too far to the side to grab an item slightly out of reach. Or, they may grab something over their head and try to back down the ladder with no hands helping. Either way, an injury from falling off a ladder can be significant. The fall often results in some form of back or leg injury and a great deal of pain to go with it.
When these types of incidents occur, it is imperative that the employee follow the established protocol of the work place. It is the employee’s responsibility to report the accident as soon as it occurs. This protects the worker as well as the business. If no report is filed, then the worker may end up bearing the majority of the expense rather than the company.
Next, the employee must follow the established protocol for medical treatment. Depending on the location of the business, such as what country, there may be different guidelines. However, every business will have a procedure in place for handling accidents at the work place. Make sure that any required paperwork is filled out and ready when going to the doctor.
After medical treatment has been established, the employee is responsible for communicating all of the information to the proper office at their company. If follow-up appointments, documentation, or any thing else is required, make sure that it is done. This provides the employee with protection under the law.
While most employees are responsible and try to avoid accidents, they do happen. When a victim of a slip and fall injury accident, make sure to follow all established rules. Medical treatment can be long and painful, so taking the proper steps can help avoid any accident benefits Toronto problems.
